Tin Can Packaging Glossary

Common material, printing and artwork terms used when sourcing custom tin cans, explained in plain English so you can read a quotation and a print spec with confidence.

Tinplate马口铁(镀锡钢板)
Cold-rolled steel sheet coated with a thin layer of tin. Tinplate is the base material for tin cans and boxes, offering corrosion resistance, formability and printability.
Tin Can马口铁罐
A container formed from tinplate, used for food, tea, coffee, confectionery, cosmetics and gift packaging. Can be round, square, rectangular or a custom shape.
Gauge / Tinplate Thickness马口铁厚度
The thickness of the tinplate sheet, expressed in millimetres or gauge. 0.23 mm is the standard food-grade thickness; 0.25 / 0.30 / 0.35 mm are used for larger or heavy-duty cans.
Offset Printing胶印(平版印刷)
The standard decoration method for tin packaging. Artwork is printed onto flat tinplate sheets before forming, which allows fine detail and accurate colour reproduction.
CMYK四色印刷
The four-colour process (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) used for full-colour artwork. Suitable for photographic and multi-colour designs on tin packaging.
Pantone潘通专色
A standardized spot colour system. Pantone matching keeps brand colours identical across batches and different print runs.
Hot Stamping / Foil Stamping烫金 / 烫印
A metallic foil (gold, silver, holographic) is transferred onto the tin surface under heat and pressure, giving a premium reflective finish.
Embossing击凸 / 压纹
The surface is raised into a three-dimensional relief pattern using a matched die, adding tactile depth to logos and motifs.
Debossing击凹
The opposite of embossing: the pattern is pressed into the surface, creating an indented, understated look.
Spot UV局部 UV 上光
A high-gloss coating applied only to selected areas, creating a contrast between glossy highlights and the matte background.
Varnish光油
A protective coating applied over the printed surface. Matte, gloss and food-safe overcoat varnish protect against fading, scratching and moisture.
Inner Lacquer / Food-grade Coating食品级内涂
A lacquer applied inside the can to isolate the contents from bare metal. Required for food, tea, coffee and cosmetics; may be BPA-free and FDA / LFGB compliant.
BPA-free不含双酚 A
Indicates the coating or material contains no bisphenol A, a requirement for food-contact packaging in many markets.
Die-line刀模线
The technical template in an artwork file that defines the cut, fold and formed shape of the tin. Required before printing.
Bleed出血
Extra artwork extending beyond the trim line (commonly 3 mm) so no unprinted edge appears after cutting.
Safe Area安全区
The inner margin of the artwork where key text and logos must stay, away from edges and the seam.
Seam接缝
The joined edge where the can body is welded or locked together. Full-wrap artwork must account for the seam direction.
Seaming卷封
The process of rolling the lid or base onto the can body to create an airtight joint.
Curling卷边
Rolling the top edge of the can body outward or inward to form a smooth, safe rim.
Airtight气密 / 密封
A lid and body fit that limits air and moisture exchange, keeping tea, coffee and dry food fresh.
Friction Lid紧配盖(摩擦盖)
A lid that grips the can body by friction; simple, low cost and suitable for dry products.
Slip Lid滑盖
A lid that slides over the body with a loose fit; easy to open, often used for gift and stationery tins.
Clamp Lid卡扣盖
A hinged clamp lid with a sealing ring, offering stronger sealing for coffee and moisture-sensitive products.
Degassing Valve单向排气阀
A one-way valve that lets carbon dioxide escape from freshly roasted coffee without letting oxygen in.
Tooling / Mold开模 / 模具
The steel tooling used to form a specific tin shape and size. Using an existing mold avoids tooling cost and shortens lead time.
MOQ最小起订量
Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest order accepted for a given tin size, material and printing method.
Sampling打样
Producing a physical sample before bulk production so print, fit, seal and finish can be approved.
OEM / ODM代工 / 原始设计制造
OEM means manufacturing to the buyer's design; ODM means the manufacturer also develops the product design for the buyer.
